Stone Cold Fox: An '80s Action Thriller Revival with a Star-Studded Cast (2025)

Hold on to your hats, action fans! A new trailer just dropped for Stone Cold Fox, and it's promising a wild ride back to the gritty, neon-soaked world of 1980s thrillers. But what makes this film particularly intriguing is its stellar cast, led by Kiernan Shipka, Kiefer Sutherland, and Krysten Ritter. Will this movie deliver the goods? Let's dive in!

Just weeks ago, director Sophie Tabet's feature debut, Stone Cold Fox, was announced – an action-packed revenge story set against the backdrop of the 1980s. The film boasts a seriously impressive cast including Kiernan Shipka (known for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mishel Prada (Brilliant Minds), and Karen Fukuhara (The Boys). Vertical, the distributor, has now revealed both a poster and a trailer, signaling a November 7th release date. You can catch the trailer above and see for yourself!

The story, penned by Tabet and Julia Roth, from a story they created with Jonathan Craven (son of the legendary Wes Craven!), centers on Fox, played by Shipka. She escapes a brutal commune, desperately searching for her family. However, the situation escalates when a ruthless queenpin (Ritter) kidnaps Fox's little sister, and a corrupt cop (Sutherland) is sent on her trail. This forces Fox to do the unthinkable: infiltrate the very place she fought so hard to escape. Think Kill Bill meets Stranger Things, but with a distinctly 80s edge.

Tabet, Roth, and Craven didn't just write the film; they also produced it, alongside Stephen Braun of Bee-Hive and Chris Abernathy and Eric B. Fleischman of The Wonder Company. Joe Roth, Andrea Bucko, Emily Hunter Salveson, and Ross Putman served as executive producers, ensuring a strong backing for this project.

Tabet, speaking with Deadline, expressed her passion for the project: "I grew up on gritty ’80s action thrillers, so getting to make my own audacious thrill-ride with a fearless partner like Vertical handling the release is a dream come true. I’m endlessly grateful to the incredible cast and crew who brought this labor of love to life.” Peter Jarowey, a partner at Vertical, added, “Sophie has delivered a thriller that keeps you on edge and showcases her talent as an emerging filmmaker. We’re excited to bring it to audiences and look forward to them experiencing it for themselves.”

Like Tabet, I also have a soft spot for those old-school action flicks. They just don't make them like they used to! The trailer for Stone Cold Fox definitely nails that exploitation movie vibe. But here’s where it gets controversial... Can a modern film truly capture the essence of those classics, or will it just end up feeling like a pastiche? The casting choices are definitely a plus, blending established names with rising stars. But will the story hold up?

And this is the part most people miss... The success of Stone Cold Fox hinges not just on its action sequences and visual style, but also on its ability to create compelling characters that audiences can root for (or hate!). Can Shipka convincingly portray the hardened Fox, and will Ritter's queenpin be a villain we love to loathe? The 80s aesthetic alone isn't enough; it needs substance.

So, what are your initial thoughts? Are you excited for Stone Cold Fox? Does the trailer capture the spirit of classic 80s action thrillers, or does it fall short? Do you think the casting choices are a hit or a miss? Let us know your opinions in the comments below! I'm particularly curious: What are some of your favorite 80s action movies, and what makes them so special? Let's discuss!
